It really amazes me how few people take the 2 minutes necessary to sync their iPhones to their home computer and how still fewer take the time to repeat the sync as their dependence on their data grows and backups become more necessary. Below is a quick tip on how to backup your iPhone data through the use of iTunes.
Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable provided and then open iTunes. If it is the first time you’ve ever connected your phone to iTunes it will ask you to name the device and select your syncing options. Always read through the options throughout this process as they will likely change as more features become available. Your phone should now be listed under the Devices section of the menu which (as of the date this was written) is available within a submenu to the left. Select the device you just named.
Across the top you should see a row of clickable buttons containing the options: Summary, Info, Apps, Ringtones, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts & Photos. Select the Info button and once on that page you have the option to sync your Address Book Contacts, Calendars and eMail accounts as well as some other options. Select the items you’d like to backup and note the ‘Advanced’ section at the bottom. This is the area that you can refer to at a later time if there is ever a need to replace the contents of the phone with what’s been stored from your last sync. Once you’ve finished selecting your backup options select ‘Apply’ and then ‘Sync’ in the lower right – and you are done!
