If your music is important enough to you that you have an extensive iTunes Library, then it’s important enough to back it up properly. Consolidating all of your files into the iTunes media area will streamline the process. Go to Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced, then select the check box for ‘Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library’ this may cause some duplicate files, but will ensure your backup routine is thorough.
Next we will organize your library by selecting File --> Library --> Organize Library. An Organize Library window will open where you should check the option ‘Consolidate Files’ and click Ok. Once the previous two steps have been done copies of all of your media should readily available for backing up.
Now open your Music folder, then iTunes, then iTunes Media – within that folder will be folders containing all of your Music, Movies or other media in your collection. Select all of the folders you’d like to backup (by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking them on a PC) and press Ctrl+C or right-click and select Copy from the dropdown list which copies all of the contents of the selection to your clipboard cache.
Next you can simply select ‘Computer’ or ‘My Computer’ from your start menu, travel to your regular backup folder or a backup drive and then press Ctrl+P or right-click and select Paste from the dropdown. Once the files have successfully transferred you are done.
It’s probably worth saying here (and if it’s not I will anyway) that all of your files are still local and vulnerable to fire, theft, flood or other disasters. Call Absorb.com today for more information on remote data backup options.
